In a recent program in which you have referred to food such as ‘steamed hair’ and ‘bamboo rats’ is something that Tang Chinese people ‘normally eat’, I would like to question your directors’ and producers’ intentions of making such a false, humiliating, racist and ignorant statement.
Were you there to witness Tang Chinese people eating these? I suppose not.
Then, here are my questions: Where did you get the information from? Who did you interview? Which literature did you read? How do you make sure the information is correct? Was it something that got translated into English correctly? Was it translated by a qualified translator? References? Authors? Years when those literature published?
It is common sense you will need to do your ‘fact check’ before you present information like this in a program for kids. What you have done is a perfect example of ignorance and uncivilization. You did not even understand the name ‘Fa Cai’ does not mean ‘hair vegetables’ at all. You got a sense of the literal meaning of one word in the name and you assumed that’s what it was? How uneducated.
You are making all those great effort contributed to ‘multiculturalism’ in Australia pointless and worthless. You are speaking for institutionalised racism. As an Australian resident, an educator, a member of the Chinese community, I condemn this program and whoever takes part in it. I would like ‘ABC me’ to apologies to the Chinese community and indeed to its audience.
